Range

A small cast-iron stove with a short flue and a firebox that is never quite allowed to go out. Flour from the mill is worked into dough here and baked into the loaves that feed foragers, miners, and anyone else who expects to be far from a kitchen at dusk.

A range has no dial and no timer. Cooks learn it by the smell of the crust and the sound the door makes when the iron is at its proper heat.
