Dense black rock that burns hotter and longer than wood, and the reason a furnace can reach the temperatures smelting needs. It comes out of the ground in flat seams, laid down where old forests were buried and pressed.

A good seam breaks into clean blocks with a dull shine. A poor one crumbles to dust in the sack and burns out fast.
