Iron Ore

Dark gray ore, heavy in the hand and common enough that most settlements have a seam within a day's walk. It rusts if you leave it damp, which is the first thing an apprentice learns the hard way.

Smelted and worked, it makes tools and weapons that outlast the people who own them. Most of what the isles are built with started here.
