Copper Ore

Reddish-brown ore, soft enough that a new miner can get it out of the rock without ruining a pickaxe. It surfaces more often than most metals, in green-stained seams that are easy to spot once you know the color.

Smelted on its own it makes a metal too soft to hold an edge. Alloyed with tin it becomes bronze, which is where most smiths start.
