Rye

Rye

Tall, slender gray-green stalks with drooping whiskered heads.

Description

Rye stands taller and thinner than any other cereal on the isles, its cool gray blue-green stalks topped with long, narrow heads that droop under whiskery awns. It thrives in the thin soil and cold wind of the outer isles, yielding a Rye SheafRye Sheaf where nothing else will grow.

A rye stand sways when the rest of the field stands still — the forager's cue to look up, and then to start cutting.
